CELEBRATION AND LAUNCH OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT WOMEN’S MENTORING PROGRAM

The Australian Local Government Women’s Association (Victorian Branch) (ALGWA Vic) is delighted the Local Government Minister the Hon Natalie Hutchins MP today launched the 2017 ALGWA Vic Mentoring Program.

The Mentoring Program was made possible by a grant from the Victorian Government, and has enabled the ALGWA Vic to provide a formal program offering training and ongoing support for the 20 matched mentors and mentees.

The ALGWA Vic has engaged experienced consultant Leonie Morgan, who brings many years of mentoring experience to the Program, to facilitate and provide training and support to women Mentors and Mentees.

“ALGWA Vic sees mentoring as an important means to encourage and support womento participate in local government” said President Helen Coleman.“In the past the ALGWA Vic has undertaken formal mentor programs which, as a volunteer organization, we have found difficult to continue without funding to support the program.The ALGWA Vic has always been a vital organization for women in local government as it has also provided informal mentoring throughout its 53 year history.”

“Many life long friendships have been forged over the years, however, we are thrilled to provide our membership with a more formal and well supported program”, added President Helen Coleman.

The Minister, the Hon Natalie Hutchins said “The Andrews Labor Government is proud to provide $20,000 grant to support ALGWA Vic mentoring program for women Councilors, in particular first time elected Councillors.”I have no doubt our new women Councillors will get great value out of this program that provides further support to help foster equality across the local government sector”
